Description of the research topic:

Heterogeneous catalytic reactions are the driving forces behind world chemical industry and solutions of environmental problems. Our research team investigates technologically and environmentally important reactions in the energy direction, such as the reduction and hydrogenation of CO2 to more valuable compounds, and the conversion and decomposition of hydrocarbons and alcohols toward hydrogen formation. An essential part of an accurate understanding is the study of the surface structure of solid catalysts by X-ray photoelectron (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron (UPS) spectroscopic methods. Great emphasis is placed on the characterization of surface conditions, the study of the interaction between the active components and the support, and the determination of oxidation states during catalytic reactions. The composition of the top layer is studied by low-energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEIS). The adsorption properties of the gas molecules, the reactivity and the stability of the surface complexes formed during the reaction are determined by high-resolution electron loss spectroscopy (HREELS) on the surface of the proven catalysts. This method characterizes the vibrational states of the structures formed on the surface. These atomic-level methods contribute to the determination of the mechanism of catalytic reactions. The composition of the gas phase during the reaction is determined using a mass spectrometer built into the complex equipment.
