Description of the research topic:
The topic is the continuation of the former research project „Geometrical
questions of Gothic architectural details”, that resulted in a PhD degree by
Krisztina Fehér. This time it covers the geometrical aspects of the buildings on
a larger scale. Polygonal apses of gothic churches are of a great significance
from this point of view. Their form and disposition was defined by multiple
factors such as the geometric knowledge of the master builders, the structure
of the vaulting, functional requirements, circumstances and characteristics of
the construction site, or even symbolic aspects, numerology or the question of
orientation. The research is focusing on how the methods of design and tracing
on site were determined by all these requirements. The research is based on the
survey of buildings and building remains by digital 3D data acquisition methods.
Beside that former building surveys will be analyzed, mainly the documents in
the Photo and Drawing Archive of the Department of History of Architecture and
Monument Preservation of BME. Suggestion of possible tracing systems will be
based on the analysis of medieval sources of geometry and design. Besides their
importance form a design-historical point of view the results can provide
assistance for the theoretical reconstruction of building ruins or fragments of
structures. The comparative analysis opens the possibility to discover the
connections of certain workshops.
