Description of the research topic:

The doctoral research focuses on the analysis of a group of buildings combining
medieval influences and elements. The style characterized by a variety of names
appeared as a stream of the romantic architecture during the 19th century and
survived in the era of Historicism.
The task of the research is to find the answer how the characteristics of this
trend can be determined. In addition to the external features, it is also necessary
to examine specific space organizational and new structural solutions.
The aim of the research is the detailed exploration and comparison of the
buildings with medieval effects in Hungary, analysis of their architectural
significance and their development in the European context. The question is
whether it is just a system of forms, or the medieval influence can be determined
in the mass formation, space organization (spatial proportions, connections), in
the structures and building materials and in the urban role of the building.
Whether what kind of compromises was created by the architects to conciliate
the structural demands and the style.
The task of the research is also to examine how and in what kind of form was
emerged the issue of the medieval styles in the debate about the Hungarian
style or national direction – and generally about the styles – in the mid-19th
century. It should also be examined how the style was linked to the tendencies
of the Austrian Empire, as well as to the European trends. It is also a task to
study the connection between the style and the type of the building or the circle
of the clients.
In the research methodology, the study of remaining plans of the 19th century
architecture in different archives plays an important role besides the analysis of
printed and archival sources. Using the sources, a database will be built, then
the comprehensive analysis, evaluations and systematic summary can be
prepared, based on the revealed connections, and expanding the initial test
criteria.
