Description of the research topic:

Characterization of structural changes of the nervous system may require knowledge of the change in number of micro-organelles. The unbiased determination of structural parameters is based on geometrical statistical methods, which, in case of derivation of numerical density of objects, requires 3-dimensional sampling. The practical implementation of the method is based on identification of microscopic (sub-micrometer) features on a series of sections spreading to macroscopic (millimeter) scale placed far from each other. The aim of the study is the development of an interactive computer program, based on reading and writing the position of the electron microscopic stage, which is suitable to identify and look up automatically the corresponding sample points on each section. The procedure should be applied to determine the induced changed in the number of organelles (mitochondria synapses) of nerve cells in different experiments modeling neuronal degeneration.
