Description of the research topic:

Recent challenges of agriculture (embedded in the vulnerable ecosystem, coupled with land use, water management, and processing technologies) result in the increasing complexity of sustainable and resilient planning and operation. The decisions about these large-scale long-term processes need a clear overview of the dynamic balances of interactions. Recently, Info Communication Technology supports the effective and cheap collection and analysis of digitalized data. However, the integrated utilization of these data is often limited to actual and local problem solving, while the comprehensive, systemic overview of large-scale long-term balances is missing. Having recognized this gap, the international process model engineering community has started to apply its well-established and non-conventional methodologies in the field of Water / Food / Energy / Ecosystem Nexus. This frame topic aims to apply modelling and simulation methods, involving the recently developed Programmable Process Structures. The main objective of an actual thesis topic is the model based analysis, design and/or operation of a complex (e.g. agricultural, aquacultural, agro-forestry, etc.) process, selected according to the interest of the PhD student.
