Description of the research topic:

his course is devoted to the late medieval debates on the nature of the intellective soul. We begin with the analysis of Aristotle’s general hylomorphic theory of the soul and then we turn to an exposition of the special problems raised by his characterization of the intellect as a divine, immortal substance that resides in human beings. After this introductory discussion we investigate the commentary tradition that is most relevant to the thirteenth-century debate (Alexander of Aphrodisias’s De intellectu et intellecto, Themistius’s De anima, Avicenna’s De anima and Averroës’ Long Commentary on Aristotle’s De anima) and the problem of body-soul dualism in the the Augustinian tradition. We will see how different approaches try to tackle the same epistemological and metaphysical problems concerning the nature and activity of the potential and active intellect. We will then discuss in detail the reception of Averroës’s psychology in the thirteenth century (“first Averroism”, “second Averroism”), the problem of the unity of the substantial form and the relation of the will and the intellect in the Franciscan and Dominican traditions.
