Description of the research topic:
This course is an introduction to some of the central problems of medieval ethical thought through the examination of major thinkers and debates in this period. We are going to deal with the following issues: 1) the concept of the will and the problems of freedom and theological fatalism in Augustine’s thought, 2) the concept of sin (Augustinism, Manicheism, Pelagianism) 3) Abelard on the intention and consent 4) the reception of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics in the XIIIth century 5) the problem of acrasy in the Middle Ages (Augustine, Anselm of Canterbury, Robert Grosseteste, Albertus Magnus, Aquinas, John Buridan) 6) synderesis and conscientia in medieval ethics ((Philippus Cancellarius, Alexander Halensis, Bonaventura, Albertus Magnus, Thomas Aquinas, Robert Kilwardby) 7) the definition and classification of virtues in medieval thought
