Description of the research topic:

The eastern fringes of the Iranian world over which the modern state of Iran could not hold sway during its formative period has become a periphery in Iranian, as well as South and Central Asian, studies. The geopolitical marginalisation of the area, largely corresponding to what is now Afghanistan, may have contributed to the multitude of conflicts it currently has to grapple with. It is therefore a timely and important task for Iranian studies to examine and study the source material pertaining to the Early Modern history, or rather, prehistory, of Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a trove of little-known Persian texts which may throw a new light on this frequently discussed, yet inadequately understood region.
