Description of the research topic:

Terahertz (THz) radiation is a not ionizing electromagnetic radiation between the infrared and microwave spectrum. It is widely used in security (i.e.: security gates at airports) and medical imaging. Although the biological effect has been widely tested with low-intensity THz radiation and most show no adverse consequences, whether a strong THz-frequency field causes developmental abnormalities is not known. Recently, compact laser-driven sources of intense and extremely intense THz pulses became available. Using human induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSC) that differentiate to neurons and human organotypic brain slices we will investigate whether THz radiation has any effect on neuronal development. With multielectrode array recordings on human brain slices we will assess the influence of THz on neuronal network functions. We also investigate axonal and dendritic development using microfluidic devices.
We use a unique microscope technology, developed by a European consortium lead by our laboratory, to visualize gene functions in live neurons in real time.
