Description of the research topic:

Maintaining the O2 concentration at an appropriate level is the most important task for the survival of a living organism. Brain is especially sensitive to O2 change: both hypoxia and hyperoxia have deleterious effect on cells. Altered oxygenation of the brain (i.e.: in stroke, sleep apnea, complication during labour, etc.) often results in serious neurological damages. High level of oxygen concentration is supplied in many circumstances (i.e.: neonatal care, stroke treatment, surgical anaesthesia, etc.) without knowing the effect of this condition on brain activity. To develop more effective treatments to hypoxia-related diseases and to evaluate the safety level of hyperoxia, we aim to identify the morphological and functional changes in the cortex at low and high oxygen levels. The goal is to understand the underlying mechanisms that could lead to more specific approaches to treat neuronal damage and prevent loss of neurons.
The results of this research will have potential significant implications in general anaesthesia and treatment with high oxygen level in various circumstances in clinics. Because hyperoxia was not suspected to cause neuronal damage in the adult human brain no processes exist to investigate potential cognitive deficits for example after general anaesthesia, and in various occupations where people are exposed to hyperoxia (i.e.: firefighters, jet pilots). The outcome of the project will also provide indications about the possibility of altered cognitive functions, memory and decision making process in hyperoxic conditions.
