Description of the research topic:
The aim of the research is to analyse the existing and new building stock, to analyse their strengths and weaknesses in line with the modernist architect Adolf Loos' paradigm that architecture should be seen as an autonomous sector inspired by the artist, and only those elements that no longer work should be replaced. Following this paradigm, the research is identifying the best approach to creating new or renovated living spaces in the United States and the European Union. Cities typically have a growing population, which risks outgrowing the existing infrastructure and expanding the city's horizontal boundaries. This process is a warning that a rethink of the existing urban fabric is needed for a sustainable city.
According to the National Human Activity Pattern Survey (NHAPS), people spend 90% of their time indoors, so human-centred design is essential to take into account the changing needs of occupants and how building systems and materials affect the comfort level of living spaces. The design of interior spaces in healthy and safe homes and workplaces should be based on environmental standards and take into account the concerns raised by pandemic COVID-19.
