Description of the research topic:

This research is directed towards the synthesis of magnetically modified composites involving graphene oxide (GO) and related graphene based materials, along with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO-NP) with a focus on a potential biomedical application (magnetic thermotherapy and controlled drug release).
- Our first aim is to formulate colloidal dispersions of the aforementioned materials, which retain their stability in biorelevant media.
- Optimized synthesis conditions of SPIO particles and GO (reduced GO, RGO) lamellae are expected to lead to nanocomposites of enhanced hyperthermic efficiency towards the selective attack of malignant tumors.
- We also intend to investigate the potential of these single-phase and composite materials as nanocarriers in drug delivery, considering the pH-sensitive surface charge and colossal surface area of GO particles and the magnetically controllable transport and heat production of SPIO-NPs
- We foresee that the biointercalated GO nanocomposites enable for (i) the increase of drug loading compared to traditional carriers based on the adsorption capacity, (ii) chemically controlled release for cationic drugs.
