Description of the research topic:
The topic of the PhD research is the investigation and development of various Advanced Oxidation Processes (UV, VUV, O3, O3/UV, H2O2/UV and heterogeneous photocatalysis) to decompose persistent organic compounds in waters. Many of these compounds are supposed or proven carcinogens, mutagens or endocrine disruptor. The PhD topic includes the development of various analytical methods (GC-MS and HPLC-MS) for detection of persistent organic pollutants (in particular pesticides and drug substances) and their metabolites in various matrices, such as surface waters and treated wastewaters.
Biological water treatment method is generally not effective to eliminate these compounds. The presence of emerging biological active, persistent trace pollutants in both drinking water and aquatic ecosystem represent a great challenge for conventional water treatment methods. Even though they have very low concentration this can be one of the most important problems of the society in the next decades. Consequently, efforts must be made to develop water treatment techniques, as well as to build tertiary water treatment units, which can be based on the Advanced Oxidation Processes. The aime of this research topic is the development and optimization of various Advanced Oxidation Processes (such as ozonation, UV and VUV photolysis and heterogeneous photocatalysis) and their combinations for elimination of these trace pollutants including investigation of energy requirement, matrix effect and transformation mechanism.
