Description of the research topic:

According to the principles of EU Bioeconomy Strategy, it is important to support the sectors using bio-based materials, such as food wastes, for production of bio-products. This leads to reduced dependence on non-renewable sources such as phosphate rocks (in production of P fertilisers)
Huge amount of keratin and bone wastes are generated daily in the poultry and meat industries in the world which might be recycled as biofertilizers in the agriculture.

Recycling these types of biogenic elements (N,P, S) present in wastes facilitates these elements to return into the biogeochemical cycle. The unsustainable phosphate consumption, and the increasing level of toxic metals in mined P requires an alternative source of phosphorous for example hydroxyapatite from bones wastes.
The keratin-based feather or hair wastes might serve as amino acid and or peptide sources and their mineralization might provide essential elements for the agricultural plants. For several popular crops, the sulfur supplementation has serious economical impact.
The aim of this project is to develop cheap, efficient and well-characterized “easy to use” bio-based fertilizers targeting various cultivated plants. We will develop a biological process technology for promoting the accessibility and uptake of these elements and optimize the amount and composition of such biofertilizers.
