Description of the research topic:

Due to the increasing usage of petrochemicals, our environment is more and more exposed to toxic organic compounds. Hydrocarbons can severely change the physicochemical and biological properties of the affected soil or body of water. So, it can hugely decrease the usefulness of the territory. Our knowledge is narrow on the microbial communities and their survival strategies in highly contaminated sites. Improvement of bioremediation techniques can be achieved through widening our understanding of microbes and their interactions with eachother and their environment in the presence of hydrocarbon contamination of high level. Furthermore, microbes which can live and proliferate in concentrated petrochemicals can be prominent in industrial applications since by meanso of their enzymes they can open new possibilities for the synthesis of industrial products in organic solvents. Our goal is to expand our understanding of the microbial community and their interactions on hydrocarbon contaminated sites and improve bioremediation techniques through the newly acquired knowledge. In addition, we aim to characterize organic solvent tolerant bacteria and their mechanism of adaptation.
