Description of the research topic:

This research is concerned with the morphosyntactic encoding and representation of tense and aspect across languages. As for the latter, it is often assumed that grammatical and situation aspect are distinct, albeit related, categories in the grammar of languages. Some questions that need further exploration are as follows: (i) How do grammatical and situation aspect interact with each other?; (ii) How are situation aspectual properties like telicity calculated? and (iii) Is situation aspect a semantic matter only or is it to be represented in the syntax as well? Another interesting question concerns how tense and aspect interact with other functional categories such as focus and negation. The primary focus of this research is Hungarian and English, but students are also welcome to work on other languages.
