Description of the research topic:

Agility is a compound notion of reconfigurability and autonomy as opposed to the typical use of automated robots with rigid pre-programmed tasks. Based upon the perceived state of the world, known robot capabilities, and desired goal, the robot should be able to adapt. This allows for a more autonomous system in the face of errors that may not have been predicted.

The upcoming IEEE P2940 Standard for Measuring Robot Agility provides a listing of desirable traits of robotic systems under the umbrella of agility. In particular, it aims to describe a set of quantitative test methods and metrics for assessing various aspects of robot agility. Quantifiable agility metrics will allow customers to purchase robots best suited to their use cases.

From a systems theoretical point of view, agility can be seen as an emergent system property of a robotic system. Emergent properties represent one of the most significant challenges for the engineering of complex systems.

In line with the goals of IEEE standardization, the candidate’s task is to investigate and analyse agile robotic systems, propose usable agility metrics together with the methodology how to measure those metrics (benchmarking). One of the most promising aspects when looking at Industry 4.0 robotic systems is communication. Thus, special emphasis should be given to the communication and networking aspects of system agility.
