Abbreviation of location of studies: TMIT

Description of the research topic:

Future immersive applications, such as Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed
Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications, leveraging recent
edge/cloud platforms and technologies can provide user experience and
capabilities never seen before. Novel services and applications can be
realized at large geographic scale for a large number of parallel
users. For example, the market trends predict special importance for
the AR gaming industry, however, there still lacks key technical
enablers. Recent cloud solutions provide versatile scaling
capabilities, however, the strict latency requirements of immersive
applications cannot be guaranteed yet and novel methods, capabilities
and programming approaches are required. The goal of the thesis is to
provide enhanced and generally applicable solutions for modeling,
programming and optimizing novel immersive applications operated on
edge/cloud platforms.

The main goals are the following:

- Propose novel models (e.g., AI/ML models) for edge/cloud based,
distributed immersive applications capturing compute and network
resource requirements (resource profiles) and end-to-end
  latency/bandwidth characteristics

- Propose/Adopt AI/ML techniques to learn the underlying edge/cloud
  platforms' characteristics

- Define novel techniques fostering the programming and operation of
distributed immersive applications on edge/cloud platforms

- Design and implement novel edge/cloud platform extensions,
capabilities and control algorithms which can guarantee the required
user experience (e.g., novel resource scaling techniques)

- Propose and investigate novel business models for the edge/cloud
  based AR gaming ecosystem
