Description of the research topic:

An essential aspect of the complexity of spoken human to human communication is that it is simultaneously realised by several modalities. Whereas it is the verbal modality that represents the underlying lexical semantic basis for the communicative interpretation of an interaction, this interpretation is largely influenced by the contribution of other modalities as well, especially the non-verbal modalities of speech prosody and gestures. The given research focuses on discovering complex patterns of verbal and non-verbal behaviour in actual dialogues applying linguistic and statistical methodologies.

Actual work consists of corpus building (video and audio), annotation (transcription of the spoken material including text and prosody, descriptive syntactic analysis, gestures, assignment of pragmatic functions to pieces of utterances), data analysis and generalisations of findings.
