Description of the research topic:

The prevalence of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) is high, 10.3-17% of women and 2.7-8.7% of men are affected. Hypothyroidism leads to atherogenic changes in lipid metabolism, however, the effect of autoimmune processes in AITD on atherosclerosis is not known in detail.
AITD and diabetes mellitus are frequently co-existent, the modalities used for their treatment affect the metabolism leading to a two-directional interaction. The underlying cause and the processes in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in AITD patients is not completely understood. Furthermore, there is a need for clinical guidelines for the treatment of co-existent thyroid and carbohydrate metabolism disorders.
Oxidative stress results in protein glycation, which leads to accumulation of advanced glycation end products: AGEs. The interactions between AGEs and their receptors on cell surfaces (RAGE) may have a role in the pathomechanism of various diseases. The soluble AGE receptor (sRAGE) competitively inhibits the AGE-RAGE interaction. Lower levels of sRAGE are supposed to act as a marker of various chronic diseases, however, higher sRAGE serum levels had been detected in hypercholesterinemia, diabetes and end-stage kidney disease. In an earlier study lower sRAGE and higher AGE levels were detected in euthyroid AITD patients who were not treated by levothyroxine substitution.
The aim of our work is to evaluate the thyroid hormone and lipid parameters, anti-TPO and anti-TG levels, serum AGE and sRAGE levels of our patients with autoimmune thyroid disorder, who are treated with supplementation of thyroid hormones according to the clinical guidelines, and investigate the correlations between our future results.
