Description of the research topic:

Aliphatic alcohols in spirits are consumed in many parts of the world however, concern about exposure to these substances can be considerable in certain countries where the level of spirit consumption is high. Compared to ethanol, aliphatic alcohols have greater hepatotoxic effects. It has been suggested that this may contribute to premature mortality from chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis. Previous studies have confirmed that alcohol abuse can also lead to immunosuppression and thereby increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. As monocytes play a crucial role in killing of pathogenic microorganisms, changes in their functional state have been invoked as a factor in the impaired antimicrobial defence observed in alcohol abusers. Aliphatic alcohols detected in spirits and their metabolites may also induce gene expression in human monocytes. Therefore, the aim of our study is to investigate the effects of these alcohols and their metabolites on human monocytes by measuring migration, cytokine gene expression, and production by the cells, as well as the influence of aliphatic alcohols and their metabolites on the differentiation of monocytes to macrophages and the mechanisms which may be involved in the regulation of the above-mentioned processes.
