Description of the research topic:

Absence seizures consist of a sudden and relatively brief impairment of consciousness which is accompanied by lack of voluntary movements and generalized, bilaterally synchronous ‘spike and wave discharges’ (SWDs) at 2.5-4 Hz in the EEG. Although considered relatively benign, absence seizures are associated with learning difficulties, behavioural disorders and other psychiatric conditions and these patients have a higher risk for developing generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Thus, understanding the mechanisms involved in the generation, maintenance and termination of absence seizures is of crucial importance.

To this end, we will monitor and modulate the activity various identified neurons in the thalamocortical network during spontaneous absence seizures in awake epileptic mice. On the other hand, activating and inactivating specific subsets neurons will help establish a causal relationship between thalamocortical function and absence epilepsy. These results could further our understanding of pathological thalamic function and may help develop novel anti-epileptic therapies.
