Description of the research topic:

One of the biggest security challenges for several regions of the African continent is the cross-border International (Transnational) Organised Crime. Though the nature of these activities can be different from region to region (smuggling of arms, humans, or drug trafficking), they can have a strong influence on not only the given country or countries but also on the security situation of an entire region, or in an even more extreme situation on all five of Buzan’s security sectors, thus, they can become a determining factor in the history of states. At the same time, we must not forget about the classic security challenges that materialize in the activities of terrorist - and separatist organizations, paramilitary - and criminal groups in the region, be it actual armed activity, training or preparation. The issue is diverse, and the application of research experiences and results can be a useful aid in the development of border protection systems in other regions of the world as well.

Research purposes:
In almost every country group, and sub-region of Africa (Central African region, border regions of the European Union and African states, etc.) – though at different levels and in different areas and with various methods – but the primary security challenge for armed bodies and border guards is border protection and the detection and prevention of illegal activities. By focusing on a specific group of countries, the aim of the research is to get a complete picture of the specific challenges affecting the states, their defence strategies, the ways of their cooperation, and the specific physical implementation of defence mechanisms (units, border protection systems on land, water, air and cyberspace). The goal is to identify possible gaps and vulnerabilities, to develop proposals for their elimination, and to make suggestions for the use of the experience discovered, and the lessons learned, in other parts of the world.
