Description of the research topic:
The increasing electric energy demand of today’s society requires the development of novel, low-cost, efficient, and environment-friendly solutions for the conversion of readily available, abundant, renewable energy sources. This topic intends the realization of energy converting systems based on antenna-rectifier structures (the rectifying element must operate very fast, e.g. a metal-insulator-metal diode), theoretically capable of the conversion of infrared radiation into electricity with nearly 100 % efficiency. During the theoretical part, low-cost structures with outstanding efficiency must be developed with the aid of simulations, based on the afore-described elements. The subsequent tasks involve the development of low-cost fabrication methods and the realization of the proposed devices. In order to successfully accomplish the practical aspects of the work, cooperation with other institutions might be required, as well. The main research tasks:
· Study the literature and theory regarding the topic.
· Define the main problems related to the feasibility of energy harvesting based on antenna-rectifier elements, propose solutions with the aid of modeling and simulations. During this task several theoretical, and practical questions should be answered, providing the opportunity for significant scientific achievements.
· Development of promising fabrication methods regarding the devices, steps towards the experimental realization.
