Description of the research topic:

"The proliferation of renewable energy sources is leading to a radical transformation of power systems. Instead of the traditional, centralized, synchronous generator-based production, the energy supply is increasingly interfaced by distributed power electronic devices. Consumers are also increasingly using electronic devices, and storage is unthinkable without power electronics converters.
This process not only requires to rethink the principles and methods used so far, but also opens up new possibilities in many areas.
The issue of power system stability is extended to artificial inertia in the lower frequency range and harmonic stability (also known as control stability) in the higher frequency range. Regulatory procedures based on new principles (e.g. Virtual Oscillator Control) are emerging to ensure synchronization of producers. Emergency island operation is in principle feasible thanks to distributed production, but it raises a number of issues from the point of view of plant management.
The research seeks answers to questions like:
- What inverter control methods can be used to ensure stable, flexible operation in the new structure and in accordance with the new requirements?
- What analytical or numerical methods are suitable for rapid stability testing of power systems? How to aggregate many distributed, inverter-based actors?
- What effect do the time delays experienced in communication used in some control algorithms have on the stability of inverter-based systems?
The results of the research can and should be validated under laboratory conditions, power-hardware-in-the-loop tests.
