Description of the research topic:

There is little information available on pediatric pancreatitis (PP). The incidence of PP has increased in the last 10 years. Except etiology, we have little information on the development of the disease and its effect on quality of life. According to our current knowledge, the occurance of genetic risk factors in PP could be significantly, even 10 times higher, than in adults. Also, we know that the role of alcohol is not common etiology in childhood. Inspite of the difference between adults and children the management of AP in children are mostly based on clinical trials performed on adults. The aim of our multinational observational clinical trial (APPLE-Analysis of pediatric pancreatitis) to collect a critical mass of clinical data and biological samples from children suffering from PP in a uniform prospective manner to (i) fill the knowledge gaps, (ii) provide simple, pediatric-specific, clinical scoring system that can stratify children with acute PP on presentation and (iii) recognize the genetic background of childhood-onset pancreatitis.
