Description of the research topic:

Title: Guarantees for time sensitive and deterministic cloud native services in modern mobile communication systems
Description of the research topic:
Mobile networks have an important role in both of today’ telecommunication and internet based services. The proliferation of fifth generation mobile networks resulted in the wide-spread adoption of cloud based virtualized services that offer flexible and resource efficient solutions even for industrial sectors, which formerly deployed dedicated networking solutions. The mobile systems of fifth generations and beyond promise low (below 10 millisecond) latencies, enabling real time remote control (e.g., for drones, industrial robots). Nevertheless, the advantages of fast radio access can be leveraged only if the latencies between the applications deployed in the cloud environments within the mobile systems and the controlled devices are deterministic. In the case of the Ethernet networks, widely used in the data planes of both 5G and cloud systems, there is already a solution to assure deterministic networking, called Time Sensitive Networking (TSN), but the combination of TSN and modern cloud systems (e.g., Kubernetes) poses lots of research challenges.
The goal is to design a solution, which enables the provisioning of low latency and deterministic infocommunication services in the virtualized environments of fifth generation and beyond mobile systems. The task of the PhD student is to propose a framework fitting into the aforementioned mobile networking architectures, which guarantees the strict quality of service requirements and a corresponding abstract resource model, propose new data handling and networking mechanisms, and investigate the performance of her/his proposals.

Research tasks:
- Literature review in the topics of architectures and mechanisms that guarantee time sensitive and deterministic networking services and virtualized network functions.
- Design of a framework that provides time sensitive and deterministic networking services and fits into the architecture of the fifth, and beyond five generation mobile networks.
- Propose an abstract resource model required to support the above framework.
- Design new scheduling and control algorithms to guarantee low and deterministic latencies for the virtualized services.
- Design a proof of concept of the proposed framework and algorithms, and provide analytical, simulation based and measurement based performance analysis.
