Description of the research topic:

Life on Earth is maintained by the solar energy involved in photosynthesis, as photosynthesis is responsible for the production of oxygen in the atmosphere and the assimilation of carbon dioxide. Green algae can produce hydrogen in addition to oxygen as a by-product of photosynthesis. However, their hydrogenase enzyme is susceptible to oxygen and competes for electrons with carbon dioxide fixation, so in nature, hydrogen production lasts only a few minutes. Our research group has developed a new type of hydrogen production method protected by a European patent, which has made it possible to produce hydrogen based on photosynthetic water splitting for days, even at the intensity of sunlight. Our goal is to increase the efficiency of hydrogen production further. To achieve this, we use molecular biology and biophysical methods to identify and test various photosynthetic mutants, further optimize our hydrogen production system, design and build photobioreactors to make hydrogen production of algae suitable for industrial use in the future.
