Description of the research topic:
Life is maintained by solar energy stored during photosynthesis, which is responsible for producing atmospheric oxygen and the assimilation of carbon dioxide. One of the goals of modern photosynthesis research is to convert solar energy into fuel or electricity. Green algae can produce hydrogen as a by-product of photosynthesis and electrical energy in the presence of suitable electron mediators. Our research group has developed a new type of hydrogen production method, which has made it possible to produce hydrogen continuously based on photosynthetic water splitting, even at the intensity of sunlight; we have similar aspirations in the field of electricity production. Our goal is to increase the efficiency of hydrogen and electricity production, for which it is essential to understand the underlying metabolic processes to identify the steps that limit both hydrogen and electricity production in green algae.
