Description of the research topic:
To date, relatively less attention has been paid to aerogels that have photochemical activity rather than chemical activity. In our research group, we have previously prepared and tested TiO2-SiO2 hybrid aerogels suitable for the catalytic decomposition or conversion of organic molecules, such as environmental pollutants textile dyes, or chlorinated phenols. Recently, we have developed a laboratory photoreactor that allows the selective and efficient study of catalytic activity using high-energy LED light sources. Within the framework of the doctoral thesis to be developed (starting from the existing methods), new aerogels with photochemical activity must be produced and fully characterized by different methods. The photochemical activity of the obtained materials will be investigated with model compounds and then with the polluting substances. We study the wavelength dependence, rate and kinetics of the catalytic activity, we determine the composition and distribution of the resulting products, and finally we propose the mechanism of the process. We use the classic synthetic chemical methodology to produce the aerogels, and then supercritical carbon dioxide technology is used to preserve the porosity and dry the materials into the aerogels. The results will be published in international scientific journals.
