Description of the research topic:
The paleopathology of tuberculosis mainly examines the traces of the disease found in human skeletal or mummified remains. The paleopathological differential diagnostics of TB is based morphological, radiological and molecular investigations of both classical osteoarticular symptoms, and newly recognised „aspecific” skeletal manifestations. The investigation of TB-human coevolution is markedly important, since this illness (most frequently caused by members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex) nowadays causes the most deaths among infectious diseases, and according to current paleopathological results more or less the same might have been the case in earlier millennia too.
