Description of the research topic:

Human paleopathology, a field of life sciences that developed in the last 150 years, has always been in a need for accurate diagnostical methodology to describe, differentiate and interpret symptoms of various pathological processes occurring on human remains, especially bones. This particular PhD program and corresponding research project deals with typology and differential diagnosis of osteoarcheological lesions with classical macromorphological and molecular approaches. Beside investigating the signs of classical osteoarticular pathological processes, our research team also studies musculoskeletal (activity-induced) skeletal stress markers with multidisciplinary approaches. Detailed analysis of the normal anatomical skeletal morphology and the pathology- or activity-related skeletal markers can be used for different types of bioarchaeological reconstructions.
