Description of the research topic:
In historical anthropology researchers began to examine developmental disorders only a few decades ago. Recognizing its importance, we find descriptions of various developmental disorders in more and more studies in the literature, however, their statistical evaluation is still rarely performed. Hungarian descriptions are rare, and they usually only present one or two cases. Currently, there are no available comparative statistical overviews regarding developmental disorders in the Hungarian osteoarchaeological material, so any new data are crucially important. Every solitary and associated manifestation, or prevalence data carry new information, helping the biological reconstruction of past populations, and the exploration of relationships between individual populations.
This research topic intends to examine the developmental disorders of cemeteries in the Southern Great Plain. The aim of the work is to examine osteoarchaeological samples, to describe developmental anomalies in the skull and the skeleton, and to evaluate them from different perspectives. Beside traditional anthropological approaches, we also plan to implement new approaches in the evaluation of the observed data, which can further the understanding of the relationship between developmental anomalies and anatomical variations, and can identify joint occurrence patterns.
