Description of the research topic:

Compared to adult lifestyle of certain historical eras, we have far less information on child rearing habits, and childhood in general from past human populations. The study of childhood mortality has only gained considerable attention recently, both in archeology and physical anthropology. During the analysis of a skeletal population, children are usually not handled with special attention, and the pathological features occurring in high numbers among them are not described in due depth, despite the fact that stress factors like quantity and composition of food-intake, social and environmental changes will have different effect on certain segments of the population, based on their biological needs. Thus, children with developing immune systems and increased need of food-intake are usually more sensitive and vulnerable to environmental and social changes, making the investigations of this age cohort extremely interesting.
The aim of this research is to compare lifestyle and life quality of different historical and archeological periods with each other, using subadult samples. Our questions are, a) what kind of differences and similarities occur in childhood pathological features and mortality rates of certain historical periods, depending on lifestyle and living circumstances, and b) how did infant life quality reflected in bone remains change over the centuries.
