Description of the research topic:

The Proposal focuses on a better understanding of the cell-mediated immune response and blood cell differentiation using Drosophila as model organisms. Drosophila provides a genetic model system with a weil established applicability to the genetic control of blood cell development and the first line immune defense, the innate immunity. As the core components of many genetic pathways, including those of blood cell development and innate immunity, are conserved from insects to humans our research will help to understand the regulation of blood cell development and innate immunity in general. A comparison of the results obtained from different Drosophila species has the potential to
provide an evolutionary context to the conclusions, and may highlight specific elements involved in the regulation of innate immunity. The identification of phylogenetically conserved patterns and pathways will shed light to their biological significance in health and in disease. Furthermore, this knowledge is essential in the long term as the regulators and the mechanisms of innate immunity have chemical inhibitors making them attractive targets for therapeutic intervention or pest control. The
project will lead to new insights into innate immunity and will provide a comprehensive overview of the innate immune response against microbes and parasites in general.
