Abbreviation of location of studies: BME

Description of the research topic:

Mass housing was, and nowadays is still a possible built answer to the housing shortage in an urbanizing world. Theory and practice shaping housing developments are global, even though the realized housing estates should be strongly related to local physical and social context. The research proposal refers to contemporary problems of mass housing neighborhoods, and as an umbrella topic, it is open in many directions. Because inherited housing estates in the post-socialist shirking cities face completely different urban challenges than dynamically growing cities when intensification of the existing stocks and the realizations of new ones give academic and professional tasks. Doctoral applicants, according to their complex background should prepare the individual research proposal focusing on a key sub-topic, or/and key location(s). One of design and space theory issues such as demolition / renewal, modern / contemporary, high-rise / low-rise, density / intensity, sustainability / livability, public / private, whole / part, planned / informal, monofunctional / multifunctional, etc. could be the guiding line and case studies facilitate the research process.
The supervisor leads the Urban Housing LAB at the BME Department of Urban Planning and Design, and Chair of the DOCONF, a doctoral conference series organized with mass housing session since 2015. As expert, she participates in international academic networks about mass housing: EU COST Action 18137 European Middle Class Mass Housing, and Docomomo ISC Urbanism / Landscape. So doctoral research on mass housing neighborhoods could be integrated into the local, and a larger academic context, as well.
