Description of the research topic:

Anthropogenic disturbances and climate change cause a range of abiotic and biotic changes in aquatic ecosystems. With regard to abiotic changes, for instance decreasing water levels and increasing water temperatures may be expected, and these may, in turn, initiate a cascade of direct and indirect changes in other physical and chemical parameters. Among the biotic changes, exotic species introductions, invasions and algal blooms threaten the regional biota as well as the whole ecosystem (e.g. food web dynamics, ecosystem services). Algae are especially important not only in aquatic, but in the global ecosystems too (e.g. key role in food webs, primary production, biogeochemical cycle and bioindication), which makes them popular and important target organisms. Since the success of a species depends on its ecological niche (fundamental and realized, respectively) and the physiological processes stand behind them, the main aim of the present study is to determine the ecophysiological characteristics of ecologically important algal species (such as invasive species or which has ability to bloom) in laboratory experiments along different environmental parameters. As the results of this study, new and detailed information will be provided about the ecophysiological plasticity and ecological competitive advantage of the given algae. This gained, comprehensive knowledge has significance in the basic researches and in the applied ecology and nature conservation.
