Description of the research topic:

Aerosol particles of both natural and anthropogenic origin are trace, but important components of the atmosphere. They can effectively control several important processes, from health issues to global climate. Particles play relevant role in cloud and precipitation formation since in the atmosphere they represent the active condensation surfaces for water vapor condensation. The formation of cloud droplets depends on the ambient conditions and the physical and chemical properties of the aerosol particles.
The main objective of the work is to investigate the affinity of the particles to uptake water to act as active cloud condensation nuclei. In the activation the hygroscopic behaviour as well as the size and number concentration of the particles are the most important factors. During the work the observational data of both intensive monitoring campaigns and continuous measurements will be used which cover data on aerosol properties (size distribution, number and mass concentration, activated number concentration at different supersaturation levels, chemical composition). The role of the environmental parameters in particle activation is also planned to study.
We expect to have detailed information:
- on hygroscopic behaviour of aerosol particles (hygroscopicity factor, activation diameter, activation ratio, etc.)
- effect of aerosol aging on the activation ability (chemical information, size distribution)
- role of environmental parameters (e.g. relative humidity, subsequent fog formation, precipitation event and types)
- seasonal variation (if present) of the aerosol activation including the discussion of the above-mentioned processes.
