Description of the research topic:

Nigeria has overtaken South Africa and in terms of size of eceonomy, it is now number one on the African continent. Its economic history is varied. Development projects started in the late colonial times in the 1950s, later developing into planned efforts. Import substitution industrialization characterized the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, with expected takeoff in terms of becoming an industrialized country. The oil economy and Structural Adjustment made such initiatives harder to implement. Still, Nigeria is one of the very few African countries with a defence economy and a regional power position.

Aims:
Nigerian industrial policy centers around development plans. In late colonial times, development was understood to be the outcome of statist scientific social engineering and development policies, such as improvements in education and the establishment of universities and ensuring that science, together with industry, may develop in a post-1945 Fabian British /New Deal style American manner. Universities were opened, agricultural, marketing and impost substitution schemes were introduced by Britain, and later by the US, Holland, and other actors in Nigeria – besides private industry, which was of course also very important (it dominated the Nigerian economy). Parastatals (SOEs) were established in this era. The origins of the Nigerian defence inductry go back to very late colonialism and independence too. In the mid-1970s, oil incomes hit coffers, crowding out investment in other areas. In 1981, a glut materialized, bringing with itself a near perpetual crisis economy. Import substitution was abandoned. The newly privatized, financialized economy brought with itself a news culture, so much so that today (2021) the WTO is headed by a Nigerian professional. At the same time, industry faces structural problems in the country.
