Description of the research topic:
Drosophila melanogaster is one of the most powerful model organisms of the germ cell research. In Drosophila, the very first cell differentiation process is the dichotomy of the somatic and germ cell lineage. Moreover, factors involved in the germ cell determination are concentrated in the so called germ plasm, which is concentrated at the posterior pole of the mature oocyte where the later primordial germ cells bud off. Transplantation experiment revealed that germ plasm contains all the factors necessary for the germ cell differentiation. This type of spatial distribution of the germ cell determinants makes Drosophila an easy-to-study model. The main goal of our laboratory is to identify novel germ cell determinants or factors involved in germ plasm assembly and function. During classical genetic and interaction-type-of genetic screens, we have identified several mutants by their germ cell less phenotypes. The goals of the PhD work are 1) to map and molecularly identify genes responsible for the earlier identified germ cell less phenotypes, and 2) detailed analysis of the molecularly identified genes by a combination of genetic and cell biological approaches with protein-protein interaction studies.
