Description of the research topic:
Absence seizures (ASs) are a feature of many idiopathic generalized epilepsies, but their pathophysiological mechanisms are still not fully understood, and pharmacological treatment is only effective in 50-80% of patients resulting in serious comorbidities. The basal ganglia have been identified as an important brain region goal directed behavior, but more recently in AS generation, but so far, the activity of its neurons during seizures has only been studied under anesthesia, which greatly influences brain activity. To reveal the involvement of various identified basal ganglia neurons in absence seizures we will monitor and bidirectionally modulate their activity during seizures using cutting edge techniques. The results could further our understanding of pathological gasal ganglia function and may help develop novel anti-epileptic therapies.
