Description of the research topic:

It is surprising that the cells consist of thousands of lipids, and their concentration from bulk structural lipids to minor signalling components covers ca. 5 orders of magnitude difference. Why are there so many lipids? It is known that cancer cells readjust their lipid metabolism playing a key role in cell division, migration, i.e., in the aggressiveness and metastatic potential of tumours. Moreover, the manipulation of lipid homeostasis has a new therapeutic potential. Recently we developed a microlipidomics toolset to map the tissue lipids at microscopic level. In order to uncover the mystery of the communication between the tumour and the surrounding stromal cells, we are planning experiments on cell cultures, animal models and human tumour tissues using up‐to‐date mass spectrometry‐based lipidomics and lipid imaging as well as biochemical and molecular biological tools.
