Description of the research topic:

Phase-locked loops (PLLs) are one of the most frequently used building blocks of computers, telecommunications and measurement systems. They have many applications from clock synchronization to carrier recovery. The most complex PLL configuration is the sampling PLL which is a highly nonlinear feedback system belonging to the class of mixed signal processing circuits. Because of the nonuniform sampling, nonlinearity and feedback, the sampling PLLs have a very rich dynamics and may exhibit chaotic behavior. Before the normal operation of a PLL it has to reach its steady state, referred to as phase-locked conditions. An exact solution to this transient called acquisition process has not yet published in the literature. In the framework of PhD studies the behavior of various PLLs has to be studied and solutions especially to their nonlinear acquisition processes have to be found.
