Description of the research topic:
In UGI surgery after a total esophagectomy for reconstruction either the stomach or the part of the colon are mostly used, but in partial esophagectomy for reconstruction the Roux jejunal loop is also feasible. In special cases of esophageal reconstructions especially in complicated cases, we can use some plastic surgical methods to dissolve the problem. Cutaneous or myocutaneous flaps are suitable for soft tissue defects of the neck region may also be transferred and used in partial defects of the cervical esophagus or securing a vulnerable suture line. The incorporation of microsurgical techniques may also be of advantage in some special situations, where either free jejunal graft or so called “supercharged graft” reconstructions are performed. This challenging esophageal reconstructions are only suitable in large surgical centres, where a special esophageal surgeon and in the microvascular reconstructions well trained plastic surgeon work together to resolve these sometimes hopeless cases. In our research, we would like to analyse utilities, indications and feasibilities of different reconstruction modalities, and in addition we design to introduce new surgical procedures.
