Description of the research topic:
IBD is a group of chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastointestinal tract with relapsing, ulcerating inflammation of the large and small bowels. IBD is considered to be not only a local process, but to be a systemic auto-inflammatory disorder. This is supported by the fact, that besides the inflammation of the bowels, IBD can cause various extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) as well, such the damage of pancreatic tissue. However, the exact mechanism of IBD-associated pancreatic damage is unclear.
