Description of the research topic:
Cognitive semantics views the semantic contents of words as open-ended and in many respects depending on the context of utterance. In a particular utterance word meaning is always the function of both linguistic and socio-cultural context and usually relies on the metaphorical or metonymical usage of the word. The research focuses on (i) how the conventional meanings of lexical items can be figuratively modified for pragmatic purposes and for the sake of communicative expressivity and efficiency in specific contexts, (ii) the intercultural aspects of inferencing and implicature in these contexts in meaning creation, and (iii) the role of Idealized Cognitive Models, and encyclopedic and cultural knowledge in conveying the intended conceptualizations. The conceptual domain and context for the research can be freely chosen by the applicant.
