Description of the research topic:

According to cognitive semantics linguistic meaning derives from the way we understand reality based on our everyday bodily experiences. This process relies on various cognitive structures and mechanisms (metaphor, metonymy, image schemata and their projections, Idealized Cognitive Models, etc.). The research (which can be carried out in any freely chosen lexical field or conceptual domain) focuses on how these structures and mechanisms – influenced by encyclopedic and cultural knowledge – result in the conceptual structures and conceptualizations underlying linguistic meaning. As part of the research the intercultural embeddedness of this process will also be investigated together with the resulting interrelatedness of semantics and culture. The research may incorporate both synchronic and diachronic aspects of meaning extension.
