Description of the research topic:

There is a strong correspondence between linguistic meaning and categorization: linguistic symbols categorize reality by defining a circle of referents. These categories derive from perception on the one hand and cultural knowledge on the other. This may cause considerable cross-linguistic differences even at the basic level, where categorization relies on perception to a much higher degree than at super-ordinate and subordinate levels. The research (which can be carried out in any freely chosen lexical field or conceptual domain) will focus on (i) how linguistic categories emerge and develop, (ii) how and why cultural knowledge influences categorization, (iii) how these categories are represented in the mind, and (iv) what the intercultural aspects of both universal and culture-dependent linguistic categorizations are.
