Description of the research topic:
Even though nation states continue to function as the basic units of international relations, transnational communities have been playing an increasingly intensive role in bilateral and supranational dealings alike transforming border areas and broadening the concept of citizenship, and leading various nation states to develop diaspora policies. The research topic invites candidates to explore the phenomena of transnationalism and diaspora politics through a theoretical and practical approach by elaborating on historical case studies of the emergence of transnational communities and on the current challenges that nation states face structurally, institutionally, politically, economically, socially or culturally in the age of globalization and global migration.
