Description of the research topic:

In a multiethnic state as the US the issue of national identity formation has constituted a recurrent topic of debate. The socio-historical context may vary, but balancing superordinate and subgroup identities has been at the heart of a shared sense of national identity. The research topic invites candidates to explore how changing demographics and culture have affected this shared sense of national identity from the early years of the republic to the present. Thus research in the field may include the following concepts and their interactions as related to American culture: national identity formation and transformation; patriotism and nationalism; cultural nationalism vs. racial-nationalism, creedal-nationalism, multi-ethnonationalism; Americanism, pro-Americanism and anti-Americanism; and the emergence of panethnicity as in the case of pan-Indianism and the new pan-Latino identity.
